PASABAG (MONK’S) & ZELVE VALLEY

Monks Valley (Pasabag) contains imposing mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys, highly remarkable earth pillars can be seen here, in the middle of a vineyard, hence the name of the place which means: the Pasa's wineyard. Pasa means "General", the military rank, in Turkish. Hermitages were carved into these chimneys and used by the monks. St Simeon the Sytlite, founder of an order of “Pillar Saints” lived in isolation in this valley. The ancient town of Zelve, was carved into a natural rock amphitheatre. Once housed one of the largest communities in the region is an amazing cave town, honeycombed with dwellings, religious and secular chambers. Now old Zelve is a ghost town and the erosion still continues.
